TSgt Walter Moss, a Houston, Texas native, joined the Air Force in 1990 after graduating from Aldine High School. He was a 16-year Air Force veteran and career EOD technician and had served in Operation DESERT STORM.
TSgt Moss deployed from the 366th Civil Engineer Squadron, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, to Sather Air Base, Iraq, in early January in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. During his time in Iraq, he had led his team to complete 119 missions and cleared 40 IEDs. He also had worked closely with the U.S. Secret Service during presidential visits to Kuwait and Baghdad.
TSgt Moss was killed March 29 2006, by an improvised explosive device while conducting safing operations in the vicinity of Baghdad. “I am sure what he was doing was a job that he didn’t want anybody else to do — that is the kind of person he was,” said his brother, Brian Moss.
He is survived by his wife, Georgina, and their two children, Andrew and Veronica, as well has his father, Walter M. Moss, Sr., and his mother, Rebecca York.
The Dining Facility at Sather AB, Iraq, was named in memory of TSgt Moss.
TSgt Moss was a member of the Member of the US Air Forces Elite Explosive Ordance Disposal (EOD) Career Field
EOD stands for Explosive Ordnance Disposal, the disarming and disposal of bombs. EOD technicians are highly-trained military members serving in the Army, Marines, Navy, and Air Force who are responsible for disarming, rendering safe, and disposing of explosive hazards.
